Frumpy to Fun: How I Remade a Thrifted Dress

On a recent trip to the thrift store, I ran across a dress made out of the prettiest fabric. It was a soft polka dotted rayon with a beautiful drape, and I loved the rich navy color. The dress itself was about as 90s as can be! It featured an oversized collar, shoulder pads, and was about three sizes to big for me. I thought it would be a fun challenge to try to remake the dress, so I bought it and brought it home. The fabric reminded me a lot of some of my favorite dress shops, and I came up with this vintage inspired redesign which I absolutely love!

First things first, the collar had to go. I removed it and switched the neckline to a v-neck which I find much more flattering. Up next, to add a bit of shape, I took in the sides and added a small bit of elastic to the back. This helped the dress to fit my waist a bit better while maintaining a soft drapey look. I was most excited to change up the sleeves, and knew I wanted to add a cute tie cuff detail. To get some extra fabric, I shortened the dress, and used the old hem to cut out my cuffs. Once those were attached, all that was left was to switch out the buttons. I opted for faux tortoiseshell buttons, and I like how they blend in a bit more with the fabric. The old shell buttons were beautiful, but just a touch flashy on this garment.

I absolutely love how the dress turned out, and it was so fun to give new life to something that would have just sat in the thrift store! For this outfit, I paired the dress with simple espadrilles and my favorite vintage basket bag. I’ll definitely be wearing it all summer long.
