A LA LA Land Christmas Dress

Technicolor Green

‘Tis the season for twirly dresses, and this year I decided to make one! Ever since I first saw LA LA Land, I’ve wanted to recreate one of the bright beautiful dresses from Emma Stone’s on screen wardrobe. Her vibrant green dress from the movie theater scene is one of my favorites, and I thought it would make the perfect candidate for a Christmas party dress. Mine is made from a floaty silk crepe de Chine, and I absolutely love how it turned out! Read on for a pattern details and a “sew with me” video!

The Perfect Pattern

I chose Butterick 6380 to base my dress on, and simply omitted the sleeves to make it more similar to the original. This vibrant green silk is from Mood Fabrics, and while it was a bit slippery and difficult to work with, I am very pleased with the quality and drape. I did alter my pattern slightly to have a v-back, and raised the front neckline about an inch.

Location, Location.

I love the Little Rock downtown area, and I knew I would have to take photos of this dress near the local ballet and theater. This little corner of the city features the cutest musical crosswalks that definitely feel LA LA Land appropriate!

If you’d like to shop this look rather than make it yourself, Emily & Fin makes a similar dress available at ModCloth. My bag is a second-hand Anthropologie piece I found on ThredUP, and my shoes are an old pair from DSW.

What movie dress or outfit should I recreate next? I’d love to know your ideas!
